LineWriter

Struct LineWriter

Source
pub struct LineWriter<W>
where W: Write + ?Sized,
{ /* private fields */ }
๐Ÿ”ฌThis is a nightly-only experimental API. (alloc_io)
Expand description

Wraps a writer and buffers output to it, flushing whenever a newline (0x0a, '\n') is detected.

The BufWriter struct wraps a writer and buffers its output. But it only does this batched write when it goes out of scope, or when the internal buffer is full. Sometimes, youโ€™d prefer to write each line as itโ€™s completed, rather than the entire buffer at once. Enter LineWriter. It does exactly that.

Like BufWriter, a LineWriterโ€™s buffer will also be flushed when the LineWriter goes out of scope or when its internal buffer is full.

If thereโ€™s still a partial line in the buffer when the LineWriter is dropped, it will flush those contents.

ยงExamples

We can use LineWriter to write one line at a time, significantly reducing the number of actual writes to the file.

use std::fs::{self, File};
use std::io::prelude::*;
use std::io::LineWriter;

fn main() -> std::io::Result<()> {
    let road_not_taken = b"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.";

    let file = File::create("poem.txt")?;
    let mut file = LineWriter::new(file);

    file.write_all(b"I shall be telling this with a sigh")?;

    // No bytes are written until a newline is encountered (or
    // the internal buffer is filled).
    assert_eq!(fs::read_to_string("poem.txt")?, "");
    file.write_all(b"\n")?;
    assert_eq!(
        fs::read_to_string("poem.txt")?,
        "I shall be telling this with a sigh\n",
    );

    // Write the rest of the poem.
    file.write_all(b"Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.")?;

    // The last line of the poem doesn't end in a newline, so
    // we have to flush or drop the `LineWriter` to finish
    // writing.
    file.flush()?;

    // Confirm the whole poem was written.
    assert_eq!(fs::read("poem.txt")?, &road_not_taken[..]);
    Ok(())
}

Implementationsยง

Sourceยง

impl<W> LineWriter<W>
where W: Write,

1.0.0 ยท Source

pub fn new(inner: W) -> LineWriter<W> โ“˜

Creates a new LineWriter.

ยงExamples
use std::fs::File;
use std::io::LineWriter;

fn main() -> std::io::Result<()> {
    let file = File::create("poem.txt")?;
    let file = LineWriter::new(file);
    Ok(())
}
1.0.0 ยท Source

pub fn with_capacity(capacity: usize, inner: W) -> LineWriter<W> โ“˜

Creates a new LineWriter with at least the specified capacity for the internal buffer.

ยงExamples
use std::fs::File;
use std::io::LineWriter;

fn main() -> std::io::Result<()> {
    let file = File::create("poem.txt")?;
    let file = LineWriter::with_capacity(100, file);
    Ok(())
}
1.0.0 ยท Source

pub fn get_mut(&mut self) -> &mut W

Gets a mutable reference to the underlying writer.

Caution must be taken when calling methods on the mutable reference returned as extra writes could corrupt the output stream.

ยงExamples
use std::fs::File;
use std::io::LineWriter;

fn main() -> std::io::Result<()> {
    let file = File::create("poem.txt")?;
    let mut file = LineWriter::new(file);

    // we can use reference just like file
    let reference = file.get_mut();
    Ok(())
}
1.0.0 ยท Source

pub fn into_inner(self) -> Result<W, IntoInnerError<LineWriter<W>>>

Unwraps this LineWriter, returning the underlying writer.

The internal buffer is written out before returning the writer.

ยงErrors

An Err will be returned if an error occurs while flushing the buffer.

ยงExamples
use std::fs::File;
use std::io::LineWriter;

fn main() -> std::io::Result<()> {
    let file = File::create("poem.txt")?;

    let writer: LineWriter<File> = LineWriter::new(file);

    let file: File = writer.into_inner()?;
    Ok(())
}
Sourceยง

impl<W> LineWriter<W>
where W: Write + ?Sized,

1.0.0 ยท Source

pub fn get_ref(&self) -> &W

Gets a reference to the underlying writer.

ยงExamples
use std::fs::File;
use std::io::LineWriter;

fn main() -> std::io::Result<()> {
    let file = File::create("poem.txt")?;
    let file = LineWriter::new(file);

    let reference = file.get_ref();
    Ok(())
}

fn execute(&mut self, command: impl Command) -> Result<&mut T, Error>

Executes the given command directly.

The given command its ANSI escape code will be written and flushed onto Self.

ยงArguments
  • Command

    The command that you want to execute directly.

ยงExample
use std::io;
use crossterm::{ExecutableCommand, style::Print};

fn main() -> io::Result<()> {
     // will be executed directly
      io::stdout()
        .execute(Print("sum:\n".to_string()))?
        .execute(Print(format!("1 + 1= {} ", 1 + 1)))?;

      Ok(())

     // ==== Output ====
     // sum:
     // 1 + 1 = 2
}

ยงNotes
  • In the case of UNIX and Windows 10, ANSI codes are written to the given โ€˜writerโ€™.
  • In case of Windows versions lower than 10, a direct WinAPI call will be made. The reason for this is that Windows versions lower than 10 do not support ANSI codes, and can therefore not be written to the given writer. Therefore, there is no difference between execute and queue for those old Windows versions.

impl<T> QueueableCommand for T
where T: Write + ?Sized,

ยง

fn queue(&mut self, command: impl Command) -> Result<&mut T, Error>

Queues the given command for further execution.

Queued commands will be executed in the following cases:

  • When flush is called manually on the given type implementing io::Write.
  • The terminal will flush automatically if the buffer is full.
  • Each line is flushed in case of stdout, because it is line buffered.
ยงArguments
  • Command

    The command that you want to queue for later execution.

ยงExamples
use std::io::{self, Write};
use crossterm::{QueueableCommand, style::Print};

 fn main() -> io::Result<()> {
    let mut stdout = io::stdout();

    // `Print` will executed executed when `flush` is called.
    stdout
        .queue(Print("foo 1\n".to_string()))?
        .queue(Print("foo 2".to_string()))?;

    // some other code (no execution happening here) ...

    // when calling `flush` on `stdout`, all commands will be written to the stdout and therefore executed.
    stdout.flush()?;

    Ok(())

    // ==== Output ====
    // foo 1
    // foo 2
}

Have a look over at the Command API for more details.

ยงNotes
  • In the case of UNIX and Windows 10, ANSI codes are written to the given โ€˜writerโ€™.
  • In case of Windows versions lower than 10, a direct WinAPI call will be made. impl<W> SynchronizedUpdate for W
where W: Write + ?Sized,

ยง

fn sync_update<T>( &mut self, operations: impl FnOnce(&mut W) -> T, ) -> Result<T, Error>

Performs a set of actions within a synchronous update.

Updates will be suspended in the terminal, the function will be executed against self, updates will be resumed, and a flush will be performed.

ยงArguments
  • Function

    A function that performs the operations that must execute in a synchronized update.

ยงExamples
use std::io;
use crossterm::{ExecutableCommand, SynchronizedUpdate, style::Print};

fn main() -> io::Result<()> {
    let mut stdout = io::stdout();

    stdout.sync_update(|stdout| {
        stdout.execute(Print("foo 1\n".to_string()))?;
        stdout.execute(Print("foo 2".to_string()))?;
        // The effects of the print command will not be present in the terminal
        // buffer, but not visible in the terminal.
        std::io::Result::Ok(())
    })?;

    // The effects of the commands will be visible.

    Ok(())

    // ==== Output ====
    // foo 1
    // foo 2
}
ยงNotes

This command is performed only using ANSI codes, and will do nothing on terminals that do not support ANSI codes, or this specific extension.

When rendering the screen of the terminal, the Emulator usually iterates through each visible grid cell and renders its current state. With applications updating the screen a at higher frequency this can cause tearing.

This mode attempts to mitigate that.

When the synchronization mode is enabled following render calls will keep rendering the last rendered state. The terminal Emulator keeps processing incoming text and sequences. When the synchronized update mode is disabled again the renderer may fetch the latest screen buffer state again, effectively avoiding the tearing effect by unintentionally rendering in the middle a of an application screen update.
